JOSEPH MACK WOOD

FAIRHOPE, Ala. – Joseph Mack Wood, August 9, 1943 to August 11, 2020. Joe, from Greensboro, Vt., and Fairhope, Ala., died peacefully in his home in Alabama, with his wife at his side.

Joe graduated from Michigan Technological University in 1967 with a degree in mathematics. He began his career at the National Security Agency as a cryptanalyst. Joe continued his work in the field of communications security at various private sector companies including BBN, CyberTrust, and Harris Corporation. After retiring in 2000, Joe participated in many community organizations, including the Hardwick Electric Commission, Northern Counties Health Care, the Greensboro Planning Commission, and the Hardwick Area Chamber of Commerce.

Joe liked all sports, but baseball was a passion. He was a lifelong Detroit Tigers fan. He enjoyed playing softball, golf and taking long walks with his dogs. Joe and his wife, Susan, were avid duplicate bridge players.

Joe had many friends and he especially enjoyed the intellectually stimulating conversations with his close friends in Vermont. He looked forward to Friday morning breakfast where they “solved” the world’s problems every week.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Earl Wood and Luella Mae McGinnis Wood, and sister Lucinda Joy Wood. He is survived by his wife, Susan Lynn Mitchell Wood, of Vermont and Alabama; son Timothy Joseph Wood (Yovi) of Gaithersburg, Md.; daughter Melissa Jill Wood of Boston, Mass.; brothers James Allan Wood (Janice) of Michigan and John Edward Wood (Terry) of Florida; sister Deborah Jean Pierce of Michigan; and grandchildren Andrew and Isabella Wood both of Gaithersburg, Md.

A celebration of Joe’s Life will be announced at a later date.
