Senior Center Hosts Curbside Dinner Fundraiser to Benefit Meals on Wheels

EAST MONTPELIER – Senior advocacy group Twin Valley Senior Center (TVSC) will host a drive-through take-out dinner fundraiser on Friday, Oct 9, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with proceeds to benefit Meals on Wheels. Menu items for the dinner include pulled pork sandwiches, fall vegetables, coleslaw, and maple pumpkin bars prepared by the TVSC chef. Volunteers and board members will be on hand to assist with curbside pick-up.

The cost of the dinner is $15 per meal, or four meals for $50.

TVSC board member Denise Wheeler said fundraising efforts this year were hit hard by COVID-19, and the center has struggled to adapt.

“A large portion of our very tight budget depended on many fundraising events throughout the year, but with all the COVID stuff, our normal fundraising events haven’t been able to happen,” Wheeler said. “So, we’re trying something different.”

Following the state-issued Stay Home, Stay Safe order in March, TVSC stopped all congregate meals, art and exercise classes, tax preparation clinics, foot clinics, and various fundraising dinners held every six to eight weeks in the center, Wheeler said.

“In the spring we usually have a yard and plant sale, and in October we have a steak dinner, raffle and auction at the Canadian Club, which raised a good share of our fundraising efforts for the year,” she explained. “But since COVID hit, we have not been able to hold any of these events.”

The center recently began offering Tai Chai and Bone Builders classes through Zoom, “but it is not the same as in person,” Wheeler said. “We are hoping this fundraising event helps to offset these other missed events.”

Wheeler said she does not expect regular TVSC fundraising efforts to resume “for the foreseeable future.”

TVSC serves the communities of Calais, Cabot, Plainfield, Marshfield, Woodbury, and East Montpelier, “and we don’t turn anyone away,” Wheeler said.

Those interested in reserving a meal(s) are asked to RSVP by October 5, by calling 223-3322, or emailing to twinvalleyseniors@myfairpoint.net. Cash (exact amount) and check payments are accepted at curbside pick-up.
