Board Makes Appointments and Hires

WALDEN – The Walden Select Board met on October 24, and the board signed an agreement to participate in the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail Management Plan. Lori Augustyniak was voted to be the town’s representative to the Northeastern Vermont Development Association and the VTrans Lamoille Valley Rail Trail Committee.

The highway budget was reviewed and preliminary development of the FY24 budget was started. Line item increases were discussed for electricity, heating fuel, brushing and chipping, contracted labor, culverts, diesel fuel, gravel, roadside mowing, and signs. Health insurance will also show an increase.

A new office copier purchase was discussed: the $3,500 previously approved does not cover the $7,000 actual cost. The board approved the $7,000 purchase price.

Walden received three bids to write the town’s Local Hazard Mitigation Plan. The board approved hiring Stephanie Magnan of Barre to write the new plan. The board approved the cost of $8,200, with $6,560 to be covered by an approved grant and the remaining 20% of $1,640 by the town.

Willhelm Woelfle inquired into the town office sending letters to homeowners when a lien is put on their property. He is concerned that liens are being placed on homes fraudulently in other states. Debbie Messier stated that she and the town clerk assistant had previously looked into this matter. She agreed to further research it.

Present at the meeting were Robert Hatch, Brenda Huntoon, Randolph Wilson, Deborah Messier, Willhelm Woelfle, and Judith Clifford. The next select board meeting, that had been scheduled for November 7, has been rescheduled to November 10, due to election activities.
