HARDWICK – Castleton University’s Oluwwdare (Olu) Sowunmi was officially named the full-time athletic director (AD) for Hazen Union this past week.

John Sperry, who was Hazen’s AD for more than 16 years, was serving in an interim capacity following the tragic passing of first-year AD Jared Cushing in October.

Sowunmi, a Bronx, N.Y., native, recently graduated from Castleton University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Athletic Leadership. He played five years of varsity basketball at Castleton, earning Team MVP honors this past spring after leading the Spartans in rebounding, while playing in all 26 games as a senior.

Sowunmi was hired by Hazen Union just before the Thanksgiving holiday and has been resettling himself in Morrisville by way of Winooski. Since graduating from Castleton in April, Sowunmi has been student teaching at South Burlington High School, as well as assisting AD Mike Jabour, learning the ins and outs of the profession.

Sperry will help Sowunmi settle into his new role at Hazen as basketball season draws closer, and will lend his time or ear to him whenever he needs it. His first impressions of Sowunmi are nothing but positive.

“Olu is a great guy, who is friendly, personable, and energetic. He seems to have a passion to learn the job and his positive energy is going to let him settle in nicely here at Hazen. Mike [Jabour] has taken him under his wing the past few months to get him ready for a challenging position like this and I think he’s going to do just fine and put in the time needed to do it the right way. I’ll be in and out with basketball season starting this week, and I’ll be there for Olu for whatever needs, as long as he needs it. I’m excited for him and the kids,” said Sperry.
