Rivard Named to Twin-State Baseball Roster
NORTHFIELD — Hazen Union’s Tyler Rivard will compete for the Vermont Twin-State baseball team this weekend as they take on New Hampshire in a doubleheader at Norwich University’s Garrity Field.
Rivard will represent a star-studded Vermont team made up of the 18 best seniors from all four divisions. He is the first Twin-State selection for Hazen Union since Rob Montgomery in 1990.
Rivard is coming off a second consecutive monster season for the Wildcats that saw the star shortstop hit over .600 with a ridiculous slugging percentage of 1.042. He belted two homers, five triples, five doubles, while striking out only twice the entire season. He was named the Capital League Player of the Year for his stellar senior campaign and helped lead the Wildcats to 29 wins the last two seasons, including consecutive top seeds in the Division III tournament. Joining Rivard on Vermont’s roster are: Blue Mountain’s Evan Dennis, Lyndon Institute’s Austin Wheeler, Jamison Nystrom of Bellows Falls, Burr & Burton’s Trevor Greene, CVU’s Chris Robinson, Colchester’s Malakai and Matai Callahan, Mount Mansfield’s Owen Pinaud, Milton’s Evan Gorton, Connor Hannan and Josh Worthington of Mount Anthony, Otter Valley’s Jordan Beayon, Evan Lamothe of South Burlington, Trevor Arsenault and Danny Kiniry of Spaulding, U-32’s Shane Starr, and Eli Duprey of Vergennes. Tim Root (Essex), Mike Howe (Otter Valley), Dan Kiniry (Spaulding), and Woodstock’s Jason Tarleton make up the Vermont coaching staff. Admission to the games is free and first pitch of the seven-inning doubleheader will be at 10 a.m., on Saturday at Norwich University.
Bugbee Wraps up Sensational Junior Season
ST. JOHNSBURY – Junior Andrew Bugbee capped off an impressive junior campaign at St. Johnsbury Academy (SJA) earlier this month by helping the Hilltoppers win their third straight Division I track and field state championship.
Bugbee is the son of Hazen Union alum Andrea (Fair) Bugbee and is a key cog on the nationally-ranked Hilltopper squad. He was stellar in the relays at states, teaming up with Jaden Beardsley, Alejandro Orozco Kuri, and Gerardo Fernandez to claim the individual title in the 4X100m relay and then Andrew Thornton-Sherman, Beardsley, and Fernandez to blitz the field in the 4X400m relay. Bugbee also had an impressive runner-up finish in the 400m, bested only by teammate Fernandez by less than half a second. Bugbee and Thornton-Sherman lead a talented returning core for SJA in 2024 as they attempt to defend their title for an unprecedented third time.
Hardwick Senior Babe Ruth Starts this Week
HARDWICK – Most of the Hazen Union baseball roster will be back on the diamond this week as they kick-off their Hardwick Senior Babe Ruth schedule this week.
Head coach Ivan Menard, Mike Baker, and Rob Montgomery will guide a loaded Hardwick roster that will also include Craftsbury Academy’s Grayson McNaughten and Stannard’s Steven Werner. The star-studded team will be led by Hazen Union graduates Tyler Rivard, Lyle Rooney, James Montgomery, and Jadon Baker, with returning starters Andrew Menard, Jake Davison, Owen Skorstad, and Dan des Groseilliers rounding out a talented roster that helped lead Hazen to the top seed in the Division III state tournament this past spring. They will look to defend the Vermont 18U Babe Ruth title that Rooney and Menard won last summer for the Green Mountain Wild, coached by the late Jared Cushing.
They were scheduled to travel to Northfield for their season opener on Tuesday and will host Franklin County at Hudson Fields at 6 p.m., on Thursday and will travel to Newport on Saturday.
