Free Youth Workshops Probe Engineering Topics
BURLINGTON – Students entering grades three through six this fall are invited to explore the field of engineering at Science Fun Day, offered at two different locations in August. There is no cost to participate, but space is limited at both sites.
Workshops will be held August 15 at the Brooks Memorial Library, 224 Main St., Brattleboro, and August 20 at the University of Vermont (UVM) Extension office, 374 Emerson Falls Road, St. Johnsbury. Both workshops will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Each session will offer hands-on activities relating to everyday engineering, renewable plastics and hurricane-proof housing. They will be led by UVM STEM Ambassadors.
The STEM Ambassadors program is a collaboration between UVM Extension 4-H and the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Students majoring in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering or math) may apply to be an ambassador and will receive training to teach engineering, computer science, robotics, healthy living and animal science topics to youths. This summer the STEM Ambassadors are able to host workshops due to a generous grant from the Vermont Agency of Education.
Advance registration is required at uvm.edu/extension/youth/announcements. The deadline to register for the Brattleboro site is August 12 and for St. Johnsbury, August 17. Although sponsored by UVM Extension 4-H, enrollment in 4-H is not required, only an interest in learning about engineering.
